Statement
Being an illustrator, I have been blessed with the opportunity to tell stories, carry themes and concepts through my drawings and paintings. These stories, that have sprouted either in the mind of a writer or from my own experiences and reflections of life, are an essential force behind my art. Just as the story is an essential part, variety is crucial to me for personal enrichment and preservation of freshness in my work. I am delighted to be able to meet the challenges of various kinds of illustrations and proficiently handle different techniques and mediums to enliven these illustrations.
The medium, technique and the materials that I employ in my art are often dictated by the mood or the concept of the story. In my work, “The Dead End” which is a watercolor illustration of a poem with the same name, I have used monochrome colors to carry the heavy theme of environmental pollution and the abuse of Nature’s resources, which is leading us to a terminal path of destruction. In “The Embrace”, I have used the same monochromatic color scheme with charcoal and chalk but to depict the essence in the security and warmth of a loving embrace. I enjoy the challenges of various kinds of illustrations.
The narration of a song into a painting has been personally rewarding to me. In the illustration “The Dangling Conversation” based on a song by Simon and Garfunkel, the seemingly luminous atmosphere of a sunny late-afternoon runs alongside the underlying shadows of sadness and frustrations. It depicts the suffocation of a relationship that has lost the essence of love and mutual interest. The withered flowers, the birds flying away from each other, the cold coffee, and characters looking away are all instruments in carrying that message.
“Winter Fun” is an illustration for a picture book on seasons for which I have used light watercolor washes to create a calm yet cheery mood. Nature reminds us with the passing seasons that change is inevitable and brings us the possibility of fresh delights. Being a mother of a six year old child, I enjoy creating illustrations for children. “In my imagination”, “Toad King” and “Stormy Sea” are illustrations for Children’s Books. Through my art I have endeavored to explore a variety of the concepts with thoughtfulness, quality and detail.
